World Environmental day-2016

ENVIS-IITM has organised an "Environmental Awareness Event" at Income tax circle, Ahmedabad, on the occasion of Word Environmental Day on 5th June 2016, away from home. Previous years, we celebrated this event in Pune and the decision to create awareness and celebrate it in Ahmedabad has been prompted due to two reasons- (1) we wanted to do this event away from home and (2) Our core scientific team along with all ENVIS staff were on a official field tour to Ahmedabad as part of institutional activity where emission inventory campaign is organized. The emission inventory campaign attracted more than 130 volenteers for field data collection. Taking advantage of ongoing filed activity, all volennteers are trained to celebrate the World Environmental Day as per the theme of the IITM-ENVIS center on Acid Rain and Air pollution". More than 100 volunteers from college and schools actively participated to make the event a success. During the event posters and banners showing environmental friendly messages has been displayed to public and they were encouraged to plant more trees and reduce pollution levels at individual level. The public has been educated by the volunteers about the air quality and impact of air pollution on health. The air quality index driven alert system has been popularised to create awareness in the society. During this activity views and feedback from public has also been collected on what they think we have to do to improve our environment. We received a tremendous response from local public which made the event a success and made this as a first step towards sensitising them about high level of pollution level in city and their role to reduce the same for betterment of environment. In addition to this, region specific data on various air pollution sources in the city including biofuel and fossil fuel burning in transport sector, commercial sector, industrial sector, residential and slums were also been collected.
